The Roland XV-2020 is a compact, budget-friendly synth module that represents a significant evolution from the JV-1010, serving as an affordable spin-off from Roland's flagship XV-3080, XV-5080 and even XV-5050 sample-based synthesizers. This 1U half-rack module delivers the same high-quality additive synthesis found in the flagship XV models, based on internal ROM sampled waveforms with expanded sonic possibilities through dual SRX expansion slots.

Key Upgrades Over the JV-1010

The XV-2020 introduces several major improvements over its JV-1010 predecessor:

Enhanced Expansion Capabilities: The most significant upgrade is the inclusion of two SRX expansion card slots (accessed via a removable top panel), compared to the JV-1010's single JV-series expansion slot. This doubling of expansion capability allows for much greater sonic flexibility and customization.

Modern USB Connectivity: The XV-2020 adds USB interface connectivity alongside traditional MIDI, providing direct computer connection without requiring separate MIDI interfaces or drivers. This represents a major step forward in modern studio integration.

Expanded Sound Library: The module features a substantially larger sound collection with 1083 ROM waveforms and 768 ready-to-go patches, compared to the JV-1010's more limited preset selection. Additionally, it includes 17 complete rhythm sets with both classic Roland analog drum sounds and conventional acoustic drum samples.

Enhanced Effects Processing: The effects section has been significantly upgraded with 40 multi-effects in addition to separate chorus and reverb processors, providing much more comprehensive sound shaping capabilities.

Improved Audio Connectivity: Unlike the JV-1010's basic stereo output, the XV-2020 provides dual output formats with both 1/4" jacks and RCA phono connectors, offering greater flexibility for studio and live applications.

Advanced GM Implementation: The XV-2020 includes an enhanced 256-sound GM bank featuring the standard 128 GM sounds plus additional GS-type variation tones, representing a significant upgrade over basic GM implementations.

Hardware MIDI Thru: Unlike many budget Roland products, the XV-2020 features a dedicated hardware MIDI Thru socket rather than a soft-switchable Out/Thru, providing more reliable MIDI chain connectivity.

Specialized Software Editor: The XV-2020 includes a purpose-built editor (not based on Sound Diver like the JV-1010), featuring an intuitive interface with on-screen keyboard, comprehensive help system, and advanced editing capabilities for patches, drum kits, and performances.

The sound architecture utilizes the same additive synthesis approach as the flagship XV models, with each patch comprising between one and four Tones layered together per voice. While this can reduce effective polyphony (a four-Tone sound reduces the 64-voice polyphony to 16 voices), it provides exceptional sound quality and complexity.

What's next? The Roland SonicCell.
