Roland Groovebox D2 was released in 2001. It is a compact orange-colored device with 2 small displays, focused on performance, and developed with innovative technology D-Field. The touch sensitive "XY" D-Field is easily programmed to create patterns, sounds, and effects. D2 took the timbres from MC-505, and has included a similar sequencer with a number of 150 patterns.

The device has a standard drum library: kick, snare, hi-hat, clap, cymbals, tom/percussion, and crash. In addition, in D2, you can find many other sounds, including 600 presets, as well as 30 sets of drums taken from MC-505. Among them there are soft piano and string tones, and aggressive "acid" TB-303 bass sounds.

D-Field includes 3 main sections: "Sound" triggers patterns and effects when you touch D-Field. The RPS button allows you to play phrases when you press one of the 8 D-Field zones. ADLIB plays solo or arpeggios. Vinyl-FX is responsible for such effects as backspins and Assign is responsible for muting.

"XY" with the primary "Filter" provides simultaneous control for 2 parameters (filter and resonance), while "MFX" offers control for the effects. The X-Fader is a crossfader, and Assign 2 carries out pitch, timbre, sound level, or rhythm change. "Spin" allows you to do turntable scratching.

In the right part of D2 there is an effect section. It includes reverb, delay, and MFX. The rear panel features MIDI In/Out, 2 RCA outputs, as well as an input for headphones.
